COORG (KODAGU)

COORG:- The most affluent hill station in Karnataka. The Hill station is also known as Kodagu. With its natural splendor and exotic scenic environment, Coorg has a special place among the Hill stations in India. Nestled among the lusting greeneries of the Western Ghats, Coorg offers unequal luxurious vacation period to its guests. Coorg ispraised as the 'Scotland of India' and also renowned as 'Kashmir of the South' due to the majestic beauty and cool ambience of the hill station at an altitude in the range of 3500 ft above sea level.

Monsoon is one of the best time to visit this hill station; and many tourists arrive in Coorg to enjoy the wild beauty which unfold to its maximum during the monsoon.

Raja's Seat


During the rule of Kings,this place was used to watch the view of sunset in the Western Ghats by the kings of Kodagu.Hence,the name Raja's seat was derived. Raja's seat has a beautiful garden and a fountain the middle. The tourists from different parts of the country are attracted by the scenic beauty which can be viewedfrom here.A toy train by name "Baba Saheb Express" takes children and adults to enjoy the view of surrounding mountains and Raja's seat.The ancient temple,"Chowti Mariyamma" is situated to the left of Raja's seat. A little distance from Raja's seat is"Gandhi Mantapa" which was built in memory of Mahatma Gandhi.

Madikeri Fort


Situated in the middle of the Madikeri Town,walkable distance  from private bus stand. Beautiful fort and palace built by the king Linga Rajendra during 1812 AD can be seen here.It is believed that there were underground routes from here to various places.Two Elephants made of RockCane can be seen which were built by the king in memory of the Royal Elephants which were killed by him.Elephants are added attraction for the tourists. A Ganesha Temple and a museum which consists of weapons and the dresses used by the King of Coorg and some inscriptions can be seen. Canon and idols can also be seen.

Omkareshwar Temple


During the rule of Haleri King Lingaraja ,a Brahmin in his court was killed by him and after the death,that Brahmin used to trouble the king as Brahmarakshasa.To correct his evil deed, the king was adviced to install a Shivalinga from Kashi. So,the king constructed this temple in 1820A.D.which is in Islamic and Gothic style.In front of the temple,a holy pond is situated.This temple is about 1 Km from Madikeri bus stand."Teppothsava" will be done during "Karthika month"

Abbey Falls


It is about 8Kms from bus stand of Madikeri. It is one of the most beautiful picnic spot situated in the middle of the coffee plantations and forests.The water which gushes down from a height of 21metres can be viewed from the hanging bridge constructed for this purpose.The road is narrow and it is not advisable for heavy vehicles like buses to near the Abby Falls

Thala Cauvery


One of the prominent pilgrim centres of Karnataka. According to Skandapurana,Lopamudra, the daughter of Kavera Muni,flowed as Cauvery River from Brahmagiri mountain after her marriage with great sage Agastya,as Agastya broke the promise made to Lopamudra.It is one of the holy place of Karnataka.Tala Cauvery is about 48Kms from Madikeri Town.

Bhagamandala


In Bhagamandala, we can find Trimurthi Temple, Shiva Temple (Here it is called as Bhagandeshwara Temple because it was installed by Sage haganda) and also the temple of Brahma  and Vishnu.Bhagamandala is 39 Kms from Madikeri.

Dubare


Situated 18Kms away from Kushal Nagar.Natural Island having boating facility to the tourists are very much attracting. Elephant training camp is also an added attraction here

Cauvery Nisargadhama


Situated near Kushal Nagar. It is 6 Kms from Kushal Nagar and about 25 Kms from Madikeri. It is a beautiful picnic spot with bamboo forest that attracts the tourists. Hanging bride, boating across river cauvery, deer park, elephant ride, tree-top shelters are the added attractions for the tourists. And also, we find cottages which reminds of ancient "Kuteera" which are meant for tourist.

Tibet Colony & Golden Temple


It is 6 Kms from Kushal Nagar called Bylakoppe. This is the largest Tibetian refugees camp. Their rich culture and religious rituals can be seen there. The monasteries built here in their style is very much attractive. The Tibetian students take education in the University here. The famous Golden Temple with huge statues of Buddha (Gold Coated) and other status are eye catching.

Mandalpatti


About 18 Kms from Madikeri, is a bewitching spot to visit. One would have to pass through arduous mountain roads to reach there. The wave of mountains unfolding one after another with a display of green & blue hues is a beholders delight. The Forest department has put up a view tower, from where one could view the sprawling landscape.

Irpu Falls & Rameshwara Temple


Rameshwara is an Ancient temple situated near Irpu falls, which is one of Kodagu's famous falls. Irpu, which is called as South Kashi, is the sub-river of Cauvery. Irpu falls is situated near this ancient temple, which invites a large number of tourists to visit the falls again and again.

Nagarahole National Park


Wildlife Sanctuary, also know as Rajiv Gandhi National Park is situated 98 Kms away from Madikeri and 90 Kms from Mysore. This is named after a small river 'Nagarhole' that means elaborately through the centre of the park flowing Eastwards. Animals in the sanctuary includes tigers, leoparts, slothbear, Asiatic Wild dogs, stripeed hyenas, elephants, gaurs, sambars, spotted deer, four horned antelopes etc., 250 types of birds and reptiles like march crocodile, star tortoises, snakes, phythons, keel back are also found here. Wild life Jungle Safar is very thrilling and many wild animals are spotted during the Safari.
